Das Weinland Südafrika blickt auf eine lange Geschichte zurück, wurden die ersten Reben am Kap doch bereits um das Jahr 1650 gepflanzt. Einige der ältesten Weingüter tragen denn auch eine entsprechende Jahreszahl im Namen, wie zum Beispiel «Klein Constantia 1685» oder «Vergelegen 1701». Als dann um ca. 1680 geflohene französische Hugenotten auf ihrer Flucht nach Südafrika Rebstöcke mitbrachten, war das Fundament für erstklassigen Rebbau gelegt. Noch heute zeugen die französischen Namen vieler Weingüter und südafrikanischer Familien von diesem Erbe. Die Einflüsse der verschiedenen Einwanderer aus Ländern wie Holland, England, Frankreich, aber auch Deutschland zeigen sich heute unter anderem in einer ungeheuren Vielfalt an Rebsorten und Stilen, basierend auf der Diversität von Bodentypen und Mesoklima, wie man sie sonst nirgends auf dieser Welt so zahlreich findet. In den diversen Weingebieten Südafrikas, die ihrerseits unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten, werden aus allen wichtigen Rebsorten dieser Welt weisse, roséfarbene und rote, trockene und süsse, aber auch prickelnde und aufgespritete Weine gekeltert. Dazu hat man mit der Sorte Pinotage, einer Kreuzung von Pinot Noir x Cinsault, ein weiteres Ass im Ärmel, wenn es um Einzigartigkeit geht.
